Want a cheap Linux computer? Join the Linux Foundation From the 'Employee Pricing' files:
The unfortunate experience that I have sometimes encountered when attempting to purchase a 'new' computer pre-installed with Linux, is that it can sometimes be more expensive than Windows (either just because, or due to the fact that Windows is already pre-installed). A new effort from the Linux Foundation could change that, and help Linus Torvalds in the process too. Back in June, the Linux Foundation started their individual membership program and they're now expanding it with new hardware discounts. Starting this week, those who pay the $99 for an individual Linux Foundation membership will also get up to 40 percent off of Lenovo devices and employee purchase pricing from Dell and HP. According to the Linux Foundation, "these benefits can translate into hundreds or thousands of dollars for those who purchase their devices as part of this program." I don't know at this time exactly how much the discounts are on specific models (I'll update when I find out). That said, to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time any major Linux organization has offered a hardware discounts to members. So in my opinion, this is really pretty cool. When the Linux Foundation started the $99 yearly fee provided users with their very own Linux.com email address. Now users can lock-in their email address for $150, for what the foundation calls a 'permanent' address. That's kinda neat also, $150 for a lifetime email address is a decent deal especially if there is no term limit (that is you could have the address for 20 years or more). "Our individual members are the heartbeat of the Linux Foundation and we will continue to find ways to extend special benefits to them," said Jim Zemlin, executive director at the Linux Foundation in a statement "Perks like the employee purchase discounts from Dell, HP and Lenovo and lifetime Linux.com email addresses are unique things we can offer to sustain support for Linux." 0 TrackBacksListed below are links to blogs that reference this entry: Want a cheap Linux computer? I work for the evil HP and the employee discount is usually about 5% off MSRP. Yes, we can purchase gear at prices WELL ABOVE the price offered at retail outlets.
Oh... its a wonderful news, i had never thought of that.
The discount sounds cool. The "permanent" address sounds like a money grab. First off, there is no such thing as a "permanent" address. Domains can change, the companies can change. And of course the longer you have a an e-mail address the more spam you get. I used to have a "permanent" emailuser.net address. Well not just an address, a whole domain of addresses. "Free" for life. The only catch is that bandwidth was capped. That address worked well for about 4 years. Then some spammer harvested my e-mail address to sign guest books with. By the time I cancelled the account I was getting so much spam my account would go over bandwidth limits within the first two hours of each month.
I have other accounts such as my "gmail" account that have lasted longer without meeting spam death. But that is because I rarely give out that address. Even so, I now get a significant amount of spam that makes it past gmail's filters.
Incidentally, my gmail account is also "permanent" as near as "permanent" could be. So is my fedora address, my suse address, my sourceforge address, etc. You can bet I did not pay a penny for any of those.
Great article, Linux computer are for the win!
The 'permanent' email address sounds like an ego thing... a ploy aimed AT the ego... so just where and what are the mail SERVERS, anyway???
