Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 Release Candidate now out

ubuntulogo.png
From the 'Hyped Linux Anticipation' files:

Not far now...

Ubuntu 9.10 RC is now available, marking the final step before the general availability of the Karmic Koala next week. Might have been fun, if it had reached general availability today, with the Windows 7 release, but hey the release is only 7 days away.

As opposed to earlier development builds of Karmic, Ubuntu developers want as many people as possible to test out their upcoming release.
"We consider this release candidate to be complete, stable, and suitable for testing by any user," Ubuntu developer Steve Langasek wrote in a mailing list posting. "The purpose of the Release Candidate is to solicit one last round of testing before the final release."
The final general availability release of Ubuntu 9.10 is now set for October 29th.

This week also marks an important milestone for Ubuntu as it celebrates its fifth anniversary as a project. For a Linux distro that seems to have made so much noise, it's good to remember that it's still a relatively young distro too.

My first experience with Ubuntu was in 2005 with the Hoary Hedgehog release. Like many others, I was running Debian and was curious about trying a new Debian based distro -- especially since Debian releases were so infrequent at the time.

Now, with its charismatic and articulate benevolent dictator for life, Mark 'Space Tourist' Shuttleworth, Ubuntu is a leading light in the Linux ecosystem, especially on the desktop.

The server side is another issue.

While I have no doubt that Ubuntu has made some inroads, the enterprise dominance (especially in the U.S) of Red Hat and Novell hasn't altered all that much in recent years. Somehow, I suspect that five years from now, I won't be able to say the same thing.

I am a long time (circa 1994) Linux user. Ubuntu 9.10 is the best so far out of the box. I am using a Lenovo S10, loaded it with the Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix, had to load the proprietary drivers to get the network working, did an apt-get update, and apt-get upgrade to get the latest packages.

Also added Virtualbox, and installed an XP virtual machine just for the applications like MS Office, Adobe CS4, Autocad, and CorelDraw that still do not have Linux versions, and am very happy with the performance (I have 2 GB RAM). Also added Chromium, much better performance than Firefox. I got rid of the my dual boot Windows 7 in favor of the XP virtual machine, uses less memory and is generally more trouble free. Windows 7 is a memory hog compared to the Ubuntu and Virtualbox XP virtual machine. I can run both together with the XP and share files through one shared folder on the Ubuntu. Very nice. Try it, I think you will like it. Another winner for Ubuntu I think. The day is coming when ARM chips are dirt cheap and in everything, Linux will rule. Meanwhile, enjoy.

Hi I have been trying Ubuntu since Hoary version, and now for Ubuntu karmic, I have started out with alpha, beta, finally RC. I love it. Things I like in 9.10:1). faster boot/shutdown time 2). artwork 3). very less bugs shown up (so far)4).ext4 Its a while I was using xp after I started trying out 9.10 series(alpha, beta,RC). Many XP Users think that UBUNTU was hard to learn/tweak, as far as I know once you get around You will love it.

Hats-off to Canonical Team

I upgraded from 9.04 to a beta 9.1 release a week ago. Everything went smoothly except for one issue: Periodic "clicks" from the speakers. Seems to be an issue with ALSA power-saving settings and certain Intel sound hardware. Googled up the problem and found that commenting out the last line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf took care of this issue.

The developers are aware of the problem and it should be fixed by official release time (if it isn't already fixed).

Also found that the graphics performance is greatly improved on my cheap HP laptop (with el-cheapo Intel graphics hardware).

XP in a virtual-box is a tight squeeze memory-wise (I've got 1GB memory), but it works well enough for me to use iTunes.'

All in all, a very worthwhile upgrade.

To Sanjaya Yogi ,

Have you tried OpenOffice as a Microsoft alternative? It's free for the download.

Ubuntu is just great. Can't wait for the new release...
Yeah.. on Virtualbox, I am sort of experiencing some memory issues.. I hope with new release of Ubuntu + Windows 7, there will be less memory issues.

For those Ubuntu users having issues with alsa, perhaps OSS will work you. OSS and Skype static work well. Surprisingly, well.
