Why the Smart Grid will be more secure than the regular grid From the 'We Know Better Now' files:
The U.S National Institutes of Standards and Technology (NIST) is now out with a draft of a 236 page report on smart grid security. Is the smart grid - the effort to modernize and connect the global energy delivery system - that vulnerable? In my view, that question is not the point. The way I see it, the efforts of NIST and others simply underscores how the world is a different place in the post 9/11 world. When the original electrical grid was put in place, the risks from potential attacks were not as real as they are today. The original electrical grid did not have to consider the same connection risks that we have today either. With the smart grid, literally everyone that has power is connected to the same network, and every node is a potential access point. There is security in numbers in my view so that's a good thing. The Smart Grid, from the ground up, is being designed with the needs of modern security in mind. It's a world where threats come from any place on Earth and connectivity is ubiquitous. Cisco sees IPv6 as being important to IPv6 deployments and so do I. It will mean that the grid can connect everyone and isolate anyone. That's the beauty of IP, you can control items at a very granular level. Isolation of different sections of the Smart Grid will also provide a high degree of security, recovery and disaster tolerance that the regular grid was never built or designed to provide. Yes, it's a bit scary to see such a large report from NIST on Smart Grid security. But it is also very reassuring to know that the next generation of the electrical system that powers our lives will be secure. 0 TrackBacksListed below are links to blogs that reference this entry: Why the Smart Grid will be more secure than the regular grid. From the 'You Should Know Better' files:
In case you haven't noticed, there is a whole mess of Cisco product that out there right now that is not very secure. So before you start breaking out the Cisco "just keep trusting us" champagne, lets stop and look at everything that can be brought to the table.
I agree that IPv6 will be very important to IPv6 deployments. Virtually all of them will use IPv6.
