Happy Birthday Google Chrome! You're growing up fast

googlechromologo.jpg
From the 'Birthday' files:

It was one year ago today that Google Chrome was officially launched. In that time, Google has removed the Beta tag and moved from a version 0.x to a 4.x dev version.

Google has been putting out releases on the dev side fairly regularly (nearly one a week) since the browser's launch, but is still growing. A year after the official launch of Google Chrome, it isn't perfect and it has more work yet to be done.

Among the items that Google promised us a year ago were Linux and Mac versions. Today we've got dev versions for both platforms, but no stable release.

A year ago, I personally was also looking forward to Google add-ons/extensions, which are not yet part of the main Chrome release either. They are coming though, and the dev channel versions have the key infrastructure in place so it's just a matter of time (I'd guess weeks not months).

We also have not yet seen the full integration of Chrome with Google's Apps or cloud efforts. Though again this is coming. Bookmark syncing is now part of the dev-channel browser too.

So no, Google Chrome is not a totally complete browser (yet) in my view. It is however more stable and faster than it was a year ago. It is also now the cornerstone of a new operating system, Chrome OS, that Google will be rolling out in 2010.

In one years time, Chrome has grown up fast hasn't it?

From beta to version 4 in one year is unheard off. From first mention to being the cornerstone of a new operating system strategy is also quite rapid. Chrome isn't just 'another Google app'. Chrome is the basis of Google's go to market strategy.

On Monday, Google announced a deal with Sony to have Chrome pre-installed as the default browser on Sony notebooks. I suspect that the deal is the first of many.

So, Happy Birthday Chrome, you sure have done a lot in your first year and you seem to be on track to do even more in year two.

I used their browser for a very short time. I had all of my favorites set up on the bar, and when I moved the arrow to some of them, the password was revealed. One of these sites was my BANK. In the string of numbers & letters, I could clearly see my secret password. What kind of security is that in a browser?
