Juniper partners with NYSE for next gen data center

From the 'fastest trading platform on the planet' files:

NYSE Euronext is partnering with Juniper Networks (NASDAQ:JNPR) in the build out and consolidation of new data centers. As of the time of this post, I don't have the financial details on the transaction.

The real key for the NYSE Euronext exchange for their new data centers is all about lowering latency and being faster. During a press conference announcing the deal, NYSE Euronext CIO Steve Rubinow said that for the exchange, "latency is an obsession."

Rubinow commented that the new data centers could be thought off as a cloud, though they will not be entirely virtualized.
"Real cloud technology requires virtualization and overhead," Rubinow said. "That bit of movement introduces latency."
The key according to Juniper executives in reducing latency is the fact that Juniper has its own silicon and the JUNOS operating system.

This is clearly a big win for Juniper and its focus on high speed networking. It's an endorsement from one of the world's biggest exchanges and one that in my view will provide Juniper with new bragging right over rival Cisco.

While Juniper is obviously now going to be a key component in the fabric of the NYSE Euronext, it's important to remember that their other vendors involved in the overall technology footprint.

Among those other vendors is Red Hat, which is the underlying operating system being used for the NYSE. Rubinow is also set to keynote the upcoming Red Hat Summit.

On the WAN transport side, the NYSE is moving to 100 gigabit Ethernet with the help of optical networking vendor Ciena.

I sent out a query to Cisco, to see if they were involved in the NYSE Euronext build out in anyway, as of the time of this blog post, Cisco had not yet responded to my query.

Other vendors aside, today is Juniper's day. But it's also important to note that even in a recession, a big IT users like the NYSE Euronext will continue to invest in technology to create competitive advantage.
"Every micro-second counts," Juniper CEO Kevin Johnson said. "Investing in technology and enabling data centers of the future enables commerce to take place and the NYSE Euronext to go to next level."
