Mandriva Linux 2009.0 is out - but do you care? From the "you might want to check this out" files:
The first time I ever saw Mandrake Linux (now Mandriva) was on a retail store shelf. That was probably 9 years ago and to be honest in the last few years I personally haven't seen Mandriva running much (as I shoulder surf desktops at conferences) - though it's hard to tell. Mandriva Linux 2009.0 is now out and it might help to improve the adoption numbers, especially for those who prefer the KDE Linux desktop. Mandriva 2009.0 includes KDE 4.1 (a whole lot more stable than KDE 4), a new GUI installer and improved boot times according to the release notes. Mandriva also claims that its installer is now capable of detecting low-resource systems or netbooks, and installing an appropriate environment. Linux bloat is a real problem for low resource systems. In my own experience I tend to spend the first hour (or more) of any new release installation turning off services that are installed by default that I'm likely to never need or use. Having an installer that can detect a low-resource system is a positive step forward overall in helping to make for faster and more efficient systems. Mandriva at this stage in its maturity faces more than just technical challenges - there are significant marketing challenges too. Traditional competitors like Red Hat, SUSE and Debian are still there and the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution is also grabbing a lot of mind and market share. It's not just good enough anymore (if it ever really was) to just be better than Windows - for Mandriva to make a dent it need to be better and somehow differentiated than other Linux distros as well. 0 TrackBacksListed below are links to blogs that reference this entry: Mandriva Linux 2009.0 is out - but do you care?. Got to be better than Ubuntu, huh?
Well, let's see...
Where's Ubuntu's centralized, graphical control center?
Tried synchronizing a Windows Mobile device on Ubuntu lately? How about a WM2003 device? How about synchronizing a Windows Mobile device *with a Blackberry*?
How's their /backports repository doing lately? Still watching the dustballs fly by?
I see they're just getting support for 3G data devices in their latest release! Awww, how cute.
Better than Ubuntu? Hey, give it a shot. Maybe you'll be surprised. :)

Mandriva
Mandriva is my #1 system and I always recommend and install it for friends or customers. Unlike other systems things just work, ie: when you install a package in Red Hat you have to spend lots of time setting up scripts just to make the program useful. I haven't tried Fedora because of the bad taste left spending so much time just getting things to work in Red Hat. Mandriva may not be bleeding edge but when you install a package it works.
Well I care...
Since I much prefer KDE to Gnome, I was running Kubuntu. And I had just gotten a little tired of KDE being somewhat of a red-haired stepchild in the Ubuntu community. So I was ready for a distro with a good KDE 4 implementation. Mandriva 2009 is now happily running my laptop. We'll see how it does going forward, but my first impression is very favorable!
Mandriva is good - I haven't used it in a few years but it was the first distro I was happy with and it was what got me using Linux.
Kubuntu is crap - I would definitely chose Mandriva over Kubuntu... Having said that I would probably chose OpenSUSE over Mandriva - but if I had to use Mandriva I wouldn't complain.
I do care. I started using Mandrake with their first version derived out of RH and I still consider it was the most decent distro. I was disturbed to see them falter through economic struggles, but I had seen them coming back up. I am not too found of their name change after acquiring Conectiva, but I see the benefits. It is the only Linux pack I ever spent money on. Wish them good luck!
Years ago when I got my first pc, I became obsessed. I knew I wanted a much cooler OS than windows 98 and I wanted to have more power to do what I want.
I got Mandrake 7 and it was fantastic. Over the years, working in audio/media I've had to basically use windows or mac 90% of the time, recently my friend talked me into coming back to linux, since I showed him years ago.
Then I found out about this hugely popular distro Ubuntu... It seems nobody wants to try or talk about anything other than ubuntu.
While it does seem easy and stable as a gnome enviroment, simple distro, its no reason to give up on the others.
Lately I've tried Fedora, Opensuse 11 and Ubuntu 8.10.
I can't wait to try this new Mandriva(still mandrake to me). I'm sure it will be great.
In addition to the previous posts I just want to say that Ubuntu's default security settings are utter crap. Any other Linux distro I've tried handles security the right way. Only Windows is worse than Ubuntu as far as security is concerned. I hope this security thing will not start a trend in Linux.
