Interop : Using Microsoft to Monitor Unix and Linux

interop.blog.small.jpg
From the 'strange things you see in Vegas' files:

I'm sitting in the main keynote hall at Interop where Microsoft's Bob Muglia (Sr VP server and tools) and  Barry Shilmover (Senior Program Manger System Center Cross Platform) just finished the first part of the afternoon keynote session.
Guess what?

You can now use Microsoft to monitor/manage Linux and Unix servers as well as open source databases and webservers. Even more surprising is the fact that Microsoft is using open source to enable their management of open source servers and applications. It's all part of the new Miicrosoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 with cross platform extensions.

The key enabling technology is the WS-MAN Web Services standard which is available in open source implementations.

Shilmover showed a live demo of Microsoft's tool actually managing a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and a MySQL database server. To be honest I've never seen anything like it before --  Microsoft demonstrating how it can manage Linux and Open Source technologies.

Shilmover's demo solicited a quick quip from Muglia too which I couldn't help but laugh out loud at.

"I can't say you should run this many non-Windows servers in your environment," Muglia told the Interop crowd. "But if you do we want you to run Microsoft System Center Operations Manager to manage them."

Alla Microsoft non sanno più cosa inventarsi per tentare di arginare l’emoraggia del comparto server verso i prodotti open source, quindi Bob Muglia (VP senior della divisione server and tools) presentanto il Microsoft System Center Operations... Read More

That's a good news for all the sysadmin who have to work in an heterogeneous environment. Now we can only hope that Microsoft opens the standard of their server so that is possible to run an administration tool to manage Microsoft products via GNU/Linux or UNIX.

Greeting'z,

I just have to say something about this,
it reminds me of all those years of managing
Windows Desktop/Clients with Novell NetWare
for the Servers, every time a problem occurred
the Real problem was Always on the Windows
side, but the Blame (and most especially from
Microsoft's representatives, and the hired
Experts) was placed on NetWare, every time,
"O' thats because your using NetWare.." ,NO,
NO, NO, Everytime the Real solution came down
to fixing or reinstalling Broken Windows
clients, and before NetWare Dominated the
workgroup servers, it was Unix, and there it
was exactly the same, if a problem arises,
blame the Unix vendor, it couldn't possible
be Windows thats at fault, but sure enough,
the Real source was Always with Windows, now
they want to do the same thing with GNU/Linux,
when something breaks (and it will), don't even
think about blaming Microsoft's CrapWare,
Blame that evil Open Source thing. F!@#$ing
Amazing how the same people can push the same
crap over, and over again, and the fools in
control of IT continue to buy into the Lie's !

You want to Manage a GNU/Linux, Unix,
environment Properly ?, do it the Right way,
with the Native tools, that have Always been
available, (hundreds of them, take your pick),
and do it for FREE, why pay Microsoft a small
(initially, then not so small) amount of money
to do what the systems already have built in
tools to do, then when a problem happens, who
gets the blame, either its your evil GNU/Linux,
or Unix system, or its You the IT guy/gal, it
could Never, Ever be Microsoft. (and if you
can buy into Microsoft's LIE's, I've got a
couple of spare Bridges over a few well known
rivers to sell you!!!).

Until a reputable and very competent independent technologists has tested this Microsoft technology to manage UNIX/Linux systems - verify that the UNIX/Linux systems are efficiently and correctly monitored, no entity in their right mind would tasks Microsoft software for their UNIX/Linux systems without knowing that somehow this management software is not subverting and breaking the configurations and safe operations of their *NIX servers. It would be very easy for Microsoft to then claim that their Windows based servers are better choice because of problems occurring in *NIX systems.

Yes I'm sure Microsoft would love to create new dependencies on Microsoft software among sysadmins and to lock people into their own proprietary, patent encumbered 'interoperability solution'. Nothing new here, just a monopolist looking for new ways to do what they have always done. Their latest 'Embrace' & 'Extend' plan is in full swing, and of course their ultimate aim is 'Extinguish'. Its business as usual at Microsoft.
