Double vision: Sprint and Verizon mirror MiFi debuts

The battle of the mobile networks continues as Verizon Wireless and Sprint both introduce mobile Wi-Fi hotspot devices designed to connect up to five wireless gadgets at a time.

Sprint just announced the release of the MiFi 2200 mobile hotspot unit, going on sale in two weeks, which allows users to connect to the Internet on up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices. Weighing in at about 2 ounces, it will cost $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a new two-year service agreement and will be available in Sprint stores, at the company Web site and other channel partners.

The company says it will launch the service under the Sprint Mobile Hotspot name, and it will be the first to support MiFi GPS capabilities, allowing users to take advantage of select location and mapping applications. The battery provides four hours of user time and 40 hours standby on a single charge, according to the company.

Sprint Wholesale will also be offering a version of the MiFi 2200 to wholesale wireless partners soon after the launch, according to the company, to allow businesses to leverage the technology.

Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless earlier this month announced its version of the Novatel-made mobile hotspot device, the MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, which went on sale yesterday. It also costs $99, with a $50 rebate, and requires a two-year activation.

“Wireless connectivity is changing. The addition of the HP Mini 1152 NR to our portfolio along with the MiFi are examples of the kinds of products that consumers want that extend the wireless experience beyond voice to lifestyle enhancements.

“These devices are part of our portfolio because we have the nation’s largest 3G network so customers can use these products with confidence that they will work in all the places they live and play,” Brenda Raney, a spokeswoman for Verizon Wirless, told InternetNews.com.
