Social Web: Sexual predators need not apply

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has hung a big "keep out" sign on the social Web, signing into law a bill that would make it a felony for registered sex offenders to hang out on sites like Facebook and MySpace.

In fact, the bill goes so far as to bar them from any site that has visitors create an account.

Here's the operative definition:

"'Social networking website' means an Internet website containing profile web pages of the members of the website that include the names or nicknames of such members, photographs placed on the profile web pages by such members, or any other personal or personally identifying information about such members and links to other profile web pages on social networking websites of friends or associates of such members that can be accessed by other members or visitors to the website. A social networking website provides members of or visitors to such website the ability to leave messages or comments on the profile web page that are visible to all or some visitors to the profile web page and may also include a form of electronic mail for members of the social networking website."

Pretty broad, no? No Flickr. No Delicious. Dear god, no Twitter.

Sites like Facebook, MySpace and Craigslist have all had their run-ins with the seedy side of human activity, and lord knows they've seen their share of sexual predators. They've also taken some steps, albeit generally at the behest of law enforcement, to keep their sites clean. It's an uphill climb.

But any Web site with profile pages? Given that more and more sites are trying to build communities around their content, which means registrations and profile pages, the Illinois law seems headed down a slippery slope that (if taken literally and obeyed) would become a much wider ban than just Facebook and its ilk. Seems an unwise approach for dealing with people we're trying to reintegrate.

The New York Times has accounts. So does cnet's technology news site. CNN integrates with Facebook accounts.

I think making a felony to read the news is a brilliant idea.

What makes you think politicians have any desire for reintegration? If they thought they could get away with simply burying sex offenders in shallow graves by the side of the road, they'd be delighted, and they'd probably organize their campaigns around it, calling their opponents soft on predators.

I am on MySpace and have been for four years now. I continue to use MySpace regularly. I am a five year combat veteran and a Marine for life. I unfortunately cannot converse with family (blood and Marine) as they are all over the country and world and will continue to use MySpace as the name states just that, It is MY SPACE! I have a Misdeameanor Sex Offense (No minor involvement)for essentially kissing a woman from the State of California that was EXPUNGED within three years of adjudication. I must register as a sex offender for life. I WILL NOT CEASE CONTACT WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS BECAUSE A BUNCH OF HYPOCRITICAL POLITICIANS AND FEAR MONGERS DEAM IT IS NECESSARY! I am a voting American with just as many rights as any one person reading this article and I think the way this country is heading is a horribly scary one if laws like this one continue to pass. All it is doing is forcing the truly depraved offenders and predators into hiding or disguising their activities. What's next barring sex-offenders from shopping at Wal-Mart, going to church, or even gardening in the privacy of their own yards as society will deam them as having an alterior motive for, God forbid, being in their yard...
In short I have applied, you little weasel, and will remain in the position that I have applied for. A MYSPACE USER!

If "politicians" could get away with simply burying sex offenders in shallow graves by the side of the road we'd be a country functioning with less than 1/3 of the Bureaucrats we have now, and DC would stink more than it already does. Remember MARK FOLEY, why is he not on a sex offender registry, how quickly that matter got pushed under the proverbial rug, and is he still collecting a public service workers wages???
